So, that was the last of our seven essential strum patterns! Hope you enjoyed this little guided tour! Not sure how to play these chords? Check out Guitar Chord Bootcamp: Barre and Beyond! Listen to this next song to hear what this rhythm sounds like. That would interrupt the downstrum-upstrum logic your hand is following. Practice! Be careful that you don't play a downstrum on the 3& instead of that upstrum. This probably feels a little weird to play at first, but it's just a matter of getting used to it. See how this pattern skips the downstrum on the three? As a result, it has two upstrums following each other, without a downstrum in between. Take a look at this next strum pattern for example: But there are also patterns where you might be tempted to break these ‘rules’. I chose strumming patterns up until now where it feels sort of natural to do these two things. You’re playing downstrums on the beat (1, 2, 3, 4) and upstrums on the upbeat (in other words: on the &). You’re strumming hand keeps moving up and down all the time.Ģ. So far, you might've noticed two things:ġ. Once you’re comfortable playing down and upstrums, there’s just one more thing you need to learn to complete your basic strumming technique. ‘Cause if you can’t do that, playing a solid strumming groove on guitar will be impossible.įor an example of how to do this with our rhythm, check out the video below, again from Strumming Skills Bootcamp. ![]() In other words: say it before you play it. You want to hear it in your head.Ī great way to check if you really ‘know’ the rhythm is to sing, hum, beatbox, tap or say it out loud. You want to be able to imagine in your mind what the strumming rhythm sounds like. So before you even touch your guitar and before we look at the downstrums and upstrums, we want to get the rhythm in our system. It’s impossible to play a rhythm without hearing what it should sound like in your head. It makes them lose the connection with their natural sense of rhythm. Now, while it’s important to get this right, many players get a little caught up in the mechanics of when your strumming hand needs to go up or down. Strumming patterns involve strumming down and strumming up. Here's a three step plan! How to Learn a New Strum Pattern Step 1: Say it before you play it So, how exactly would we get rhythm like this into our system? Next, let’s take the simplest strum rhythm possible as an example.Īs you can see, we need to strum on each beat. This approach will make the downstrums sound a bit heaver and give your upstrums a bit of a lighter sound. Then on the upstrum, hit only the highest (thinnest) three or four strings. So which strings should you be hitting? A good rule of thumb is to hit either all of the strings or just the lower (thicker) strings on every downstrum. You might think we need to hit all the notes in a chord with every strum, but very often we hit just three or four strings. Don’t hit all the strings with every strum ![]() As you progress, try thicker picks too though, as they’ll give you a bit more control over your sound. If you’re not used to playing with a pick, it can really help to practice with a thin pick that’s nice and bendy. By holding your pick with a light grip, you allow it to glide over the strings easily. ![]() Also: it’s really hard to keep your wrist nice and loose when your gripping your pick tightly. But by gripping it too tight, you make it hard for the pick to move past the strings smoothly and it might get caught up in there somewhere. It’s totally normal to want to hold on to the pick tightly, because you don’t want it to move and you don’t want to drop it. You might be tempted to make the up and down movement with your lower part of your arm (your forearm), but though your lower arm will be moving up and down a little bit as well, that’s only a small part of the movement. (Funk guitarist Ross Bolton calls this a ‘drunken wrist’. Most of the movement will come from rotating your lower arm (you could also say: twisting your wrist) and letting your hand and wrist hang loose and follow that motion. Make sure you're not locking your wrist: you need to keep it nice and loose. We’ll take a closer look at how this works later in this guide. Constantly moving your hand also makes it much easier to keep time. By doing this, you don’t have to think about when you need to move your strumming hand: it’s moving all the time. Keep your strumming hand moving at all times, even when you’re not hitting any strings for a couple of beats.

Finally, the last bit of advice is on situations where you have two junctions close together. The last thing we need to do is put a standard signal here to prevent trains from colliding with any stationed here. On the other side of the bypass we do the same except now we have two entrances and only one exit. To do that following the established rule we place a chain signal at the start of the junction and standard signals at each of the exits. ![]() The blue train naturally avoids the path with station however, we want to hold it in the bypass to prevent it from colliding with the orange train stationed here. Both trains stop at the north station but the blue train stops at the west and the orange stops at the east. Here we have track with a station bypass. And do the same in the opposite direction if you have trains travelling both ways. The rule to remember is: place a chain signal going into a junction and standard signals going out of a junction. If I then block the exit this train now stops before entering the junction so it doesn't prevent this one from running. Go ahead and replace all the entrances with chain signals and let these run. This tells the train to stop unless its intended exit is clear. If one of the exits is green, while another is red, then the chain signal is blue. And similarly when both signals are red, the chain signal is red. When both signals are green, the chain signal is also green. Chain signals also stop trains from entering a block but unlike standard signals, which operate independently, chain signals will copy the state of signals further along the track. However if a train can't exit, then the junction becomes blocked and other trains can't use it. When the junction block is clear, trains are allowed to enter. You can manage traffic through a junction using the same standard signals. A more efficient solution is to have a main line and branch off where necessary. A circular network is one of the most simple setups but eventually it becomes impractical to add new stations. Now the trains can move out of the way of each other. To remove the deadlock we need to create at least one additional block by placing another signal. Both of the blocks are occupied by one of the trains and the signals are preventing the other from entering. Each colour represents a different block. As of version 0.16 you can now see the blocks by holding a signal whereas in previous versions you had to use the debug console. A signal marks the start of a block and prevents a train from entering unless the block is clear. So how do we solve this? Well first we have to understand the track mechanics in Factorio. This setup has created a deadlock where neither train can proceed. This is because signals won't allow trains to pass while there's another occupying the tracks ahead. ![]() After a while the trains leave the station but they will stop at the signals. Let's place a signal in front of each station and set the trains to run automatically. If you want to control trains travelling in both directions you need to place signals on both sides. Trains traveling in the direction of the arrows are affected by the signal while trains travelling in the opposite direction will ignore it. If you hover over one of the squares arrows will appear along the track. These mark the places where you can place the signal. When I select a signal you'll notice green squares appear on each side of the tracks. Here we have a simple circular track with two trains both stopping at each station. Let's take a look at the standard signal first. Factorio has two types of signals: rail signals and rail chain signals. However without any form of traffic management trains will eventually collide with one another causing damage. In the early game you can accomplish this with conveyor belts but as your base expands it's more efficient to build a train network and even more so to have multiple trains share the same tracks. To do this you'll need to transport resources and components from one part of the base to another. Factorio is a game in which you build sprawling factories to produce research, ammunition to defend yourself from the local wildlife and finally the components to build a rocket to get off-planet and win. In this video we're looking at train signals in Factorio. ![]() Get a jump on your holiday workouts with some Personal Training at the Eccles Student Life Center.
